Jana pushes her students to pay attention to what they are trying to achieve in a very thoughtful manner. She does this without telling us what to paint, but instead, she encourages us to explore areas outside our comfort zone while choosing our subjects and color.

When I first laid eyes on the piece that had to come home with me, I had a visceral response and felt as though I was taking a trip into my past. Jana had composed 3 Colorado Springs scenes as a trio. These were of the Navaho Hogan, Herman’s Plumbing, and the art deco Garage at North Corona and Columbia. I’m the 5 th generation of my family to grow up in Colorado Springs, you can say the city is definitely in my heart and soul. I knew I could not walk away that night without at least one of them. I hope in time to procure the other 2...or more. Every time I walk past that painting I feel that tug to a different place and time. It takes a special artist that can evoke that level of response.

Jana is a very supportive, encouraging, and knowledgeable teacher. Her teaching style quieted my fears and emboldened me to make art my way, intuitively. Her extensive knowledge and experience in color theory and watercolor technique helped me develop skills I haven't learned in college art class. And there's a saying that emerged throughout the two years I've been in Jana's class, "It's never just about art that you learn in Jana's class."
