Abstract Mixed Media - Small Works

We are excited to bring you this new mixed media collection by Jana L. Bussanich, where you can dwell with us in the landscape of possibility. There is freedom in constraint. This new work is emerging under the limitations of the pandemic where life feels narrow and expansive, desolate but joyful, bound yet free.

Works on paper using watercolor, ink, pencil, oil pastel, and collage.

Art Travel Materials

Travel Artist - Jana's travels have taken her to Holland, England, France, Austria, and New Zealand. She plans and takes adult students on International Art Holidays. Though plans for international workshops are on hold due to the 2020 Pandemic, Jana still takes her art materials along on day trips to the mountains, around town Sketch Hunting, and on trips to visit family in other states. To help you plan your next outing with art-making, Jana put together this list of items that she commonly carries in her backpack.

Artist Essentials

At Jana L. Bussanich Art and Yellow Couch, we value accessibility to art-making for anyone interested in learning to paint. With over a decade of experience as a watercolorist and art instructor, Jana has discovered which products are essential to her practice. We hope these recommendations will help you get started on your artist journey.

Operating on a shoestring? You can make many paintings with one set of primaries, a quality brush, and a pad better quality affordable paper. Start here

Starter Primaries

This triad will give you three primaries that are “just right,” meaning that they don’t lean warm or cool and will yield pretty true secondary colors when mixed.

 Quality Brush

Better Quality Affordable Paper

Beyond these basics, the remaining items are hierarchical in terms of frequency of use. We believe that keeping an art journal is an essential part of successful art practice. The Seawhite of Brighton is heavenly to work with, but if you can only afford one journal get the Strathmore.

Watercolor Palettes

I love mixing on any glass, porcelain, or white enameled surface, and if that surface is beautiful without any paint pooling on it, even better! You can grab a plate from the cupboard or try one of these beautifully designed porcelain palettes. When using glass, place on top of a white liner/paper.

For the Plein Aire Artist, the Mijello Airtight Watercolor 18-Well Blue Palette is a good choice and keeps the paint where you need it!

Going out Sketch Hunting? The Meeden half or full pan metal tin pairs well with any of the travel brush sets, my favorites are the Richeson Gray Matters Pocket Travel Brush Watercolor Set brush and the Caran d 'Ache d-ache.
